Praktik echo sounders are designed for measuring water body depth and searching for promising fishing spots. The operating principle of Praktik echo sounders is based on the reception of ultrasonic waves sent into the water by the sensor-transducer after their reflection back from the bottom or other echo-impulse reflecting objects. The probing sound beam forms a cone, with its apex being the sensor-transducer, usually located slightly below the water surface, and its base being the water body bottom. If an ultrasonic wave encounters any obstacle along its path, part of it is reflected back to the sensor-transducer, and information about the presence of that object is displayed on the receiver screen. The drawings on the right show typical images displayed on an echo sounder screen and the corresponding information about the water column in summer and winter. It is very important to understand that the echo sounder does not display a spatial (three-dimensional) image of the water column on the screen, but only a projection onto a vertical plane passing through the center of the probing cone. This creates the illusion that all objects discovered by the beam are located directly under the transducer. The basis of modern fishing is a principle that consists not so much in searching for fish, but rather in determining their usual habitats. In this activity, the most important thing is to understand the water body and the fish living in it, and in solving such a task, the help of an echo sounder is invaluable. However, to fully understand the displayed image, some experience needs to be acquired.
